Bilbao, September 18, 2008. Made, a Gamesa subsidiary, has re-launched its business activities by signing a new agreement with the Tunisian company Société Tunisienne de L'Electricité et du Gaz (STEG) for the supply of 91 AE-61 wind turbine generators to what will become the country’s largest wind power facilities. These turbines with a total power of 120 MW will be supplied to the Metline and Kchabta wind farms, both of which are located in the Bizerte region.
The agreement amounts to almost €200 million and its scope includes the turnkey supply of the wind turbines, as well as their operation and maintenance, along with a substation and power line for each of the wind farms. The closure of this deal consolidates Made’s position of leadership as the main wind turbine generator supplier in Tunisia, where it has entered into agreements for the installation of more than 170 MW to date. This figure represents a significant milestone in a high-potential market within the energy industry, particularly as regards wind power development.
This project, which can count on financing from the Spanish Development Aid Fund (Fondo Español de Ayuda al Desarrollo), will also have a significant local component. Part of the ancillary equipment will be built in Tunisia and the wind farms’ civil and electrical works will be subcontracted in the country. It is also expected that 120 new direct local jobs are to be created during the first two years of the project.
Gamesa’s Chairman and CEO, Guillermo Ulacia, stated that, “this agreement highlights the continuity of the relationship with STEG through a project in which Made once again makes available its experience and the advanced technology of its wind turbines”, while at the same time contributing to the country’s future in sustainable energy.
From an environmental viewpoint, the wind turbine generators Made will supply to the aforementioned wind farms will contribute towards generating electricity supplies that respect the environment and avoid the emission of pollutants to the atmosphere. More specifically, the annual production of these installations’ 120 MW will replace 35,691 tonnes of petroleum equivalent (TPE) per year and avoid the emission into the atmosphere of 311,261 tonnes of CO2 a year.
